Lectio Divina
Reading the Bible Reflectively
Our group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays in church, except when there is a Advent, Lent or Summer SALT course.
Christians believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, which is why the reading of Scripture needs to be an important part of our discipleship. Through the many kinds and styles of writing we can hear God speaking to us in a way that builds up our faith and guides us in our lives.
There are many ways of helping us make the most of what we read. Many of us use study guides, brief notes accompanying a set pattern of readings over time. Some use commentaries, both for devotional and academic study. Others are happy just to read the passages set in the Daily Offices of Morning and Evening Prayer, or Prayer during the Day.
Lectio Divina takes us on another route. It gives us space not only to hear the Bible read but to reflect in silence and then share our own thoughts about what it means to us.
The pattern of each session is like this…
7.30pm — Fellowship over coffee and biscuits (sometimes cake!)
8.00pm — We hear a passage of Scripture read to us followed by time for silent reflection
8.10pm — We hear the passage read again, listen to some brief thoughts from the weekly resource by St Beuno’s Retreat Centre in North Wales to guide us, followed by more silence.
8.20pm — We hear the passage a third time, followed by a longer silence and the floor is then open for all to share their thoughts. Each contribution is valued but we avoid discussion, taking in what God may be saying to us through the other person.
8.30pm — We end the evening by spending some time in prayer for the world and needs known to us.
