Bill and
Alan's Act of Remembrance
13 November 2005
One of the most moving
moments in St. Andrew's 2005 Remembrance Sunday service took place when
Bill King and Alan Mayfield (pictured above) laid wreaths as symbols of
remembrance and hope.
Bill has recently returned
from a visit to the battlefields where he served during World War II,
and during his visit he managed to climb the 150 steps of the Arnheim Bridge.
After the laying of the
wreaths Bill read The Kohima Epitaph:
When you go home
tell them of us and say,
for your tomorrow
we gave our today.
In his sermon, Vicar of St.
Andrew's Julian Smith spoke of the lessons learned from World Wars I and
II, and from the current conflict in Iraq:
-
WWI - all life is
precious and a God given gift
-
WWII - the importance
of challenging and standing up to evil
-
Iraq - We must be
careful who we have as our friends, as evil is evil no matter which
'side' it is on.
Ever-living God
we remember those whom you
have
gathered from the storm of
war into the
peace of your presence;
may that same peace calm
our fears,
bring justice to all
peoples
and establish harmony among
the nations,
through Jesus Christ our
Lord,
Amen.
