Jools Holland to play Wells Cathedral
News
from the
Diocese of Bath and Wells - 28 January 2007
MUSICIAN JOOLS HOLLAND is going to play a very special charity concert
in Wells Cathedral.
The programme will include a new Mass setting he has composed which was
specially commissioned by the Bishop of Bath and Wells, Rt Revd Peter
Price.
And the concert will raise funds for the upkeep of Cathedrals throughout
the British Isles.
The event will be on Tuesday 6 March and tickets will go on sale on 2
February.
The whole event will be repeated on 20 March in Rochester Cathedral and
the tickets for that will go on sale on 12 February.
Each event is expected to attract an audience of about 700 people.
Jools Holland welcome the opportunity to perform his new Mass in
historic Cathedrals.
“I am extremely honoured to be performing this new composition in
Cathedrals that I feel are part of the aesthetics and appeal of cities
in the UK,” he said. “The plight of these stunning buildings is
something that is close to my heart, and to me, Cathedrals are the
greatest buildings in Christendom.
“I specifically chose Wells and Rochester Cathedrals as during all my
travels I have enjoyed the music and choirs of these two Cathedrals
enormously. The beauty and history of these buildings will make these
shows a unique experience not only for the audience, but also for me.”
The concerts will reflect the versatility of Jools Holland’s
performances and be mainly acoustic backed by his touring rhythm
section.
Using elements of the Cathedral’s choirs, as well as compositions by
Thomas Dorsey, the godfather of gospel, the venues and songs provide a
stunning auditorium for the vocal talents of regular Jools Holland
collaborators Sam Brown, Ruby Turner and Louise Marshall.
In keeping with the nature of Cathedrals and the surroundings that they
provide, the shows will be different from any other Jools Holland
performance leaning toward an eclectic mix of gospel and choral flavours
as well as Jools’ own inimitable style.
The construction of Wells Cathedral, in the heart of Somerset, was began
in 1180 and Rochester Cathedral in Kent is the second oldest Cathedral
in England and dates back to 1080.
Money raised at these two concerts will go to a central fund that is
dedicated both to the continued maintenance and essential repairs of
Cathedrals, and also to create an endowment for Rochester Cathedral
preserving Cathedral music which Jools feels is as important as the
stonework itself.
