The Narthex
Pronunciation:
'när-"theks
Function: noun
Etymology: Late Greek narthEx, from Greek, giant fennel, cane,
casket
1 : the portico of an ancient church
2 : a vestibule leading to the nave of a church
(Merriam-Webster Online
Dictionary)
Entrance to the church is through the narthex which was built in 1893,
altered in 1984 and extended in 1993. It now provides kitchen, a toilet
with baby changing facilities, a small meeting room and access to an
outside area reordered to become a Garden of Remembrance. It's an ideal
place to mingle after services with a cup of coffee. Notice boards line
one wall with information about church and community activities, and
work by the children of St. Andrew's School is often on display.

The row
of windows along the west wall provide an ideal area for floral displays
throughout the year.
