Stained glass in St. Andrew's:

The Railway Window

Click each small picture to see a larger image.

St. Andrew's suffered a spate of vandalism in 1997 which resulted in a number of windows being damaged or destroyed.  We subsequently fitted new window guards and re-sited some stained glass windows.

The Railway Window was produced for St. Andrew's by local artist Clare Maryan Green, and was dedicated by The Rt Revd Peter Price, Bishop of Bath and Wells, on 22 December 2002.  The special service was attended by members of the Great Western Railway Society.

The window replaced one smashed beyond repair of St Martin - no one knows why that one was put there originally!   (But see Julian Smith's theory on the previous page.)

Thanks to Bill Perry for the background information on the locomotive.

The children in the picture are on the 40 steps bridge in St Andrew's Primary School uniform. Below the picture is a verse from Daniel chapter 7 "behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven".  To the left of this verse is the insignia of St. Andrew's Church of England Primary School, and to the right that of the GWR.

The GWR locomotive is 2913  Saint Andrew.   Those who love steam trains will probably like to know that it was :

  • built in August 1907.

  • First shed allocation Old Oak Common.

  • Half-cone boiler and superheater fitted October 1909. Reverted to full-cone boiler April 1911.

  • Last shed allocation Swindon.

  • Withdrawn May 1948.

No. 2913 Saint Andrew stands in the Parish of St. Andrew at the Up relief platform, with a train for Bristol in 1947. The picture was taken by Bob Franklin, and is reproduced courtesy of the Simon Bowditch collection.
The east end of Taunton Station in Broad Gauge days, probably about 1885-1887. The spire of St Andrew's church is visible in the background (see large picture). This picture is taken from a publication entitled "Taunton in the 1880's" published by The Broad Gauge Society and Bob Youlden 2001, and has been kindly supplied by Simon Bowditch.
