The
Bishop of Taunton, Rt. Revd. Andrew Radford.
The
Bishop of Taunton, Rt. Revd. Andrew John Radford, died on Sunday 21 May,
aged 62. He had been Bishop of Taunton since December 1998.
He was taken ill last year
and was found to have a malignant brain tumour in September. He died in
the Sue Ryder Hospice in Gloucester near his family home, where he had
been admitted last week.
He leaves a wife Christine,
two married daughters Jo and Nicola, and two grandchildren Eva, aged
three, and Andrew, one.
The Bishop of Bath and
Wells, Rt Revd Peter Price, said: “Andrew’s untimely death is a cause of
deep sadness to his wife Christine, his daughters, and all his family,
friends, and colleagues in the Diocese of Bath and Wells and the wider
Anglican Communion.”
Bishop Peter said: “Andrew
had a distinguished and varied career in architecture, the media and in
the church. A gifted communicator, he brought his skills into his
ministry as a priest and bishop. A popular and innovative preacher,
Andrew will be remembered by many for his clear presentation of the
Christian faith in his confirmation addresses, and his evangelistic
ministry. He was spoken of as England’s ‘Billy Graham’."
"His administrative and pastoral skills were widely valued and
appreciated. Andrew was responsible for the placing and training of
curates in their early years of ministry, as well as chairing the
Pastoral Committee and Council for Ministry in the Diocese. He served as
a trustee of the Overseas Bishops Fund and was a Foundation Fellow of
the University of Gloucester. He will be remembered for his love of his
family, his delight in music, and for his faithfulness to the God whom
he sought to serve in his life as a lay man, deacon, priest and bishop.”
Bishop Andrew was known and
loved throughout the Diocese and worked with people of all ages. His
varied ministry included everything from full immersion baptisms to
blessing a mobile Sunday School, and from ordinations to quiet country
evensongs.
The funeral will be
private. A memorial service will be held later in Wells Cathedral.
